January 2008

This was our last month in New Zealand as Darren and I  were going to Australia at the end of the school holidays, towards early February 2008. We wanted to spend as much time as possible with Katherine before her leaving to go to the USA to spend 6 months living and going to school in magdalena New Mexico. She will be living with my sister Margreet and brother in Law Ian, whilst attending highschool in Magdalena.

Christopher came after Katherine had left and we went camping in the Coromandel for a week and he stayed with us in Waihi beach for a few days as well.

We had tanja, Raymond, Dina and Luke visiting us in Waihi joined by Sabine, Russell, Stefan and Isabel and the dog Albert. They both came twice for a week once in the beginning of Janauary and once for a week at the end of January.

We all did lots of fun things together and had a ball on the beach and in the backyard.

Tanja and family arrived on january the 2nd the same day Darren went to pick up Katherine from half way down the coast on the way to Waihau Bay where Katherine had spend some quality time with her mom and family at the beach. Lisa Katherine's friend was staying in Atheneree just down the road in Waihi beach and she came and stayed a few nights with us in Waihi beach, as well.

Raymond , and the Mc candlish family had all arrived a few days later and the weather was just magic so we spend lots of time at the beach building sand castles, digging holes, sun bathing, swimming, surfing, eating ice cream and what ever else you do at the beach with friends.

One of the local events in Waihi beach is a beach beauty competition for mini's, juniors and seniors alike. Katherine entered in the Miss Waihi junior competition this year and had lots of help from Sabine and Tanja and suporters but did not quite make it to the top.

An all time favourite for the backyard is a game of petonque and the girls team Tanja, Dina and Lidi beat the boys by miles.

Luke had his first bike ride on the "real" road he normally rides his bike on the gravel road on the farm, not only that ,he did not know how to get started without a push yet but Darren fixed that with a little help and after that we were able to go for a drink at the RSA, all riding our bikes. Dina and Luke are great bikers now.

On the 9th of january 2008 it was D Day Katherine was finally off to the States, Darren and Michelle thought the time came way to fast Katherine could hardly wait. With a little too much luggage the departure went without a hitch. Katherine spend three super days at Dan the fishman in Los Angeles and flew from there to Alburqueque where she was met by margreet and Ian who took her home to Magdalena.

Christopher joined us towards the third week of January when katherine was safe in the states and all the visitors had gone home. We had given the batch to Martina and family for a week so Chris, darren and I decided to head towards the Coromandel for a week. On the way out we stopped for most off the day in Waihi township as there was an open day at the mines (gold) Very interesting.

It was full moon and very windy which caused th high tide to be very high tide and the low tide to be almost high tide, normally in cooks beach in the Coromandel you can dig on the beach at low tide and find hotwater springs however every time you had dug up enough to make a small "tub" the waves crashed in and wiped our "private spa" away. Still lots of fun and we were not the only ones!!

At the Whitianga inlet Christopher, Darren and I tried for some snapper fishing, the day before there had been a fishing competition and plenty of fish had been caught however the wind and the high tide made going out on a boat a bit difficult so we opted for beach casting but to no avail it was fish and chips on the beach from the shop that night.

We came back to a house full at the beach because Sabine and family, Tanja and family had, to our pleasure decided to come back for one last week together at the beach before us taking off for a few years overseas. When we arrived the table was set with white linnen, a bouquet had been made out of flax, rings out of shells and to top it off a "wedding dress (out of a sheet) We than were usherd into the pool to cool off and "be married". The kids thought it was no good travelling when not married. Now that is friends for you!!

Luke and Stefan did not give BIG man Christopher a lot of free space because they wanted what their "hero" wanted, Christopher did well and everybody had a good time.

At the end it was only Sabine, Isabel, Darren, Lidi, Stefan and Christopher left for the last two days at the beach. The boys got an hour of profi surf lessons which they thouroughly enjoyed and not only did they enjoy it they did realy well, it was fun to watch them.

By the 1st week of February it was back to Darren and Lidi only and time to empty Waihi beach batch, time for travel...........
