August 2008 Australia.

Mission Beach to Alice Springs.

Wow, what a busy month August has been, lots of travelling and lots to see and do, enjoy our photo's from this months. It was extremly difficult to pick from over 750 photo's just from August...

The scenery from Mission beach to Port Douglas is wonderfully fertile. Beautiful Port Douglas is a refreshingly low-rise resort town, nestled in the green pocket of the far North. We met up with Henk and Alice for a week in Port Douglas and explored the rainforest and aboriginal culture with them . Darren and i went on a beautiful sailing trip to the Great Barrier Reef and saw some amazing coral reef and fish whilst snorkeling from the boat.

Inland from the coast we headed through the lush Atherton Tableland, a region of beautiful scenery and an altitude of over a 1000 meteres.

Onto the Gulf Savannah Highway through remote, hot and sparseley populated countryside to Karumba on the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Down along the Barkly towards Conclurry onto the Flinders highway to Three Ways. Stopping at the HUGE granit boulders of Karlu Karlu(Devils Marbels) before heading to our final destination for the month, Alice Springs.

From Mission Beach to Port Douglas what a beautiful drive along deserted beaches and azure blue waters.

At the Marina of Port Douglas with Henk and Alice.

Our snorkeling trip to the Low Isles situated about 7 km from Port Douglas. An ideal day with enough wind to sail but smooth enough to see lots under water even a huge Turtle..

All wetsuited up ready to explore the Ocean floor.

On the way to Coocktown we stopped along the road to read up on the area's history in particular the formation of the Black mountains..

In Coocktown we took a 4 hour tour with Willy through his countryside. He explained, the meaning of dreaming and the drawings in the caves as well as natures secret pantry..

Looking over the hinterland of Port Douglas on the way back from our trip to Cooktown with Henk and Alice.

Henk being a pro golfer, Lidi a want to be and Darren our "caddy" we all played Golf just out of Port Douglas.

Skyrail  Rainforest cabbleway one of the worlds longest cabbleways at 7.5 km long, taking us over the top of the rainforest, passing the Barron falls up to Kuranda. From which we took the scenic railway back to Cairns, passing through 15 tunnels..

In the heart of Coffee growing Australia, Mareeba, where 75% of all of Australia's coffee is grown, and where we enjoyed a lovely tatsing of coffee and chocolate..

We went to a presentation on Australian birds of prey, which we see regullary all over Australia's countryside, and Darren even had an owl land on him.

Live hazards when you play golf in Australia. Not only do they sit on the fairway or green they laugh when you miss a shot!.

Undara, Volcanic Lavatubes an amazing natural feature formed thousands of years ago and very worthwhile a visit,We stayed at the campground and amazingly enough met up for the third time with Graeme and Sharree .

This is what we saw for hundreds of kilometers whilst crossing Australia's outback. Two small cars can pass when each car puts one set of wheels in the dirt. But see next picture.......

When you meet one of these  you have to have both sets of wheels off the road and  be stopped on the side, and let the roadtrain with a length up to 53 meteres, pass.

Outback country is also Croc country and all along the waterways you see signs saying Achtung/warning Croc infested waters. This is.a lifesize replica of the biggest croc ever caught.

Droversfestival in Camooweal, on Friday there was an opening parade in the main street of Camooweal, which is on the Barkly Highway. The highway was blocked off for the parade and all (population 325)of  the village attended. We stayed for the whole weekend, watching mustering and branding, listening to country music and dancing the night away.

Devils Marbles, an unique natural feature, which have very high Aboriginal values attached.

Gemfossicking in Gemtree, on the Zircone and Garnetfileds. Here we are fossicking for our Zircones which gave us an impression of the hard work the "real" fossickers have to do to make a living. And do not forget we came by car not on horseback.

At Gemtree campground, on their 250 acres, they have room for a 9 hole outback golfcourse. Darren is putting on the "green" with the course behind him and the landingstrip for the flying doctors in front of him. He made me eat dust!

The only way to have a boatrace on the Todd River in Alice Springs is to build your boat on a four wheel drive and "ride" the river. Every year, since 47 years, Alice Springs makes a day out of racing (with your legs as the bottom of the boat) on the Todd river.

From Alice Springs we are making trips into the ranges, this is the Chasm at the Western McDonnell Ranges, an oasis in the desert.

We are awaiting Danny from Los Angeles to fly into Alice after which we will spend some time with him visiting the famous Ayers Rock, Olgas and Kings Cannyon.

From Alice we will be taking the Ghan (train) to Adelaide and our car will be coming by transporter to Adelaide.
