December 2008

The last few weeks on the main land of Australia, before going by ferry to Tasmania for exactly 4 weeks. We had sold our van by the middle of the month and were now staying in backpackers and hostels. We were offered a very good price for our van with the condition that the lady buyer could take it over just before Christmas.

So we drove from Melbourne to Sydney and met her in a campground in Sydney, in the middle, as she was from Brisbane and had flown down to Sydney to pick up the van. After that we were "homeless and carless".

We must be getting "old" because we did not join in with the other "travellers" in the backpackers for Christmas parties but tried to get a room away from most of the noise.........did it work? Yeah right!!

It was quite a difference moving "down" from our comfy van to our small rental car and tent but still good fun. The weather could have been a bit friendlier to us, we even had snow on the mountains in Tassie at Christmas, nothing a sheepskin underlay and a thick blanket could not fix...

Once in a lifetime the moon and stars are set in such a way that when you look up to the sky in this particular night (December 9th) you see a sweet smile.

Darren with his Bushranger hero, Ned Kelly, a modern Robin Hood of Australia.

Leaving Melbourne on the Spirit of Australia heading towards Devonport on Tasmania. We took a day passing which took 10 hours on a calm sunny day just beautiful.

The two ferries making the crossing from and to devonport and Melbourne pass each other half way and so you get a great sight of the boat.

Dam just below Devonport. We set out for various daytrips from Devonport for the first few days as there was lots to discover in and around the area.

This is a field full of poppies with huge signs on the fence saying do not pick poppies as it is not only an offence it could be harmfull to your health. The understatement of the year.

Stop over at Sheffield with its 50 or so murals in the town. On the brink of being a ghosttown the locals came up with the idea of a yearly competition for artists who wanted to paint a mural and now they have a thriving town with beautiful murals, great idea.

Christmas has arrived, we spend it in Tasmania, in Launceston. We wanted to go out for a special dinner or christmas lunch however all the eateries were closed so we made our own nice meal in the camp.

As you can see plenty of forest/wood on Tasmania and people make good use of it with a "firewood fence" which they will all or more use up over the cold winterdays and nights.

Lavender farm in Scottsdale just before the harvest. We had a good walk through the fields and had a coffee with lavender muffin in the restaurant, interesting.

Blowhole, mighty big waves crashed on the rocks and formed a natural spectacular.

The weather could not make up it's mind what it wanted to do, wind, sunshine and rain but look what the rewaad was; double the rainbow, double the pot of gold.

Our set up for the last 6 weeks of our travells through OZ, from which we spend 4 in Tasmania. Good little car and Yes it did all fit in albeit very tight.

Tasmania has some very interesting road signs, we were driving a car up this hill but I am sure the name was given to this hill by the early settlers who either walked or rode their horse up this steep hill.

The last day of the Year we spend in Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania. We took a courtesey bus in to town, had a look at all the different yachts, which had come in from the yearly Melbourne to Hobart race. Had a few drinks listining to street music, a dance in a pub and watched the fireworks over the harbour and ocean very nice ending of a spectacular year.

HAPPY HEALTHY 2009, may all your wishes be granted in the New Year.
