April  2009

We have arrived in The United States of America for our year long travel through the Western part  of  the  United States of America and Canada.

We flew into Los Angeles and stayed with our best friend Dan for a week before heading to New Mexico to see and spend time with Margreet and Ian and the rest of the family.

Ian and Margreet had organised a second hand campervan (a 20 year old Ford Ecoline 6 Berth) which we purchased of a friend of theirs and which is going to be our new home for the year.

We stayed for a good three weeks with them and did lots and lots of fun things together, and also organised a few patch ups for the van, so it would be safe and comfortable for our big roadtrip.

The weather was great in wider LA and Dan, Jay, Darren and I went for a bike ride along the beach at Balboa Island.

Muscle beach, at Venice beach with one of the many interesting characters you socialise with there!!

San Diego, LaJolla, dinner with Dan at Restaurant 910, superb.

Arrived at Margreet and Ian's, first breakfast on the deck of their house.

Easter with the Stalnackers at their home. Saturday we all painted and coloured the eggs, the Easterbunny hid them on Sunday morning in Sonja and Dougs garden and we all had breakfast together before heading off to church.

Dan came over to Magdalena, to Margreet and Ian's and brought 11 pounds of Aspergus, which is one of the products he imports from Holland to the States.

Darren and "his" workers pouring a garage floor for Ian on the far backend of the section, a man never has enough storage!!

Family hike up the mountain looking for semi-precious stones and fools gold.

Margreet throwing a pot, I got to have a turn too and it is much harder than it looks but very satisfying even if your first object looks like it fell out of space.

Micky and Diamond where very patient with the guestriders and we had a ball.

Beatrix, partner Mark and dog Skippy came to stay from Great Falls a mear 1600 Miles away. We had a very good catch up time for the 5 days they where there.

Day out, exploring the surrounding area of Magdalena, a 300 mile daytrip which took us to lots of pretty and interesting places. This is Okoma Indian Village.

The Indian village is on top of a Mesa (plateau) and we choose to walk, climb back to the valley from the top, pretty but quiet steep.

Hard getting good help in school! Sonja, in her line of work as a special care teacher needed some help with a programm assessing young childrens abilities and I was it.

Gathering of the Nations in Albuquerque where Darren and I spend a day watching competitions in dancing, drums and lots of offerings of different native art, especially beautiful crafted Turquoise.

One of the members from the 500 different competing tribes.

The Schiefs have arrived (finally after a few delays, three days, due to overbookings)

We all, Roel, Marijke, Lars, Darren and I got to ride on the two horses from Margreet and Ian. This is Darren on Margreets horse Diamond.

Another hike up the mountain with a fantastic view over the surrounding  ranges and the valley of Magdalena. Cowboy Lars is feeling right at home.

Sonja and Dougs son Jackson and Lars had no problems overcoming the language barrier, maybe the drinks helped...........

Smores (roasted marshmellows, chocolate and a biscuit) =some more please, making over a fire in the backyard on a nice warm evening.

The following day, Roel, Marijke, Lars, Darren and I, left Magdalena to travel via the Grand Canyon to Los Angeles in our campervan. It is about 1500 Miles and we are planning to do this in 4 days, and make lots of stops on the way and stay overnight in campgrounds.
